Hello I’m Updating

If you haven’t seen it yet, Sockbaby has finally released the conclusion to the Sockbaby Trilogy. If you haven’t seen these movies, I would highly recommend checking them out… “That Sockbaby is a Sockbaby Jesus, the Sock Saviour of the Sock People,” need I say more?

I haven’t updated in a while, and I apologize for that. In my defense, I’ve been pretty busy. For instance, I am now back in Vermont for a few weeks, UberCon just wrapped up, and so did my semester. On a more geeky front, I managed to break my server severely enough that the CTO of the company had to step in to patch things. Basically, in my recent site renovations, one of the changes I requested concerning the subdomains and how things get redirected managed to create an instance of a bug that hadn’t cropped up in 3 years. I would like to publicly thank Terra, the CTO of FutureQuest, for not only fixing the issue, but doing so quickly and professionally. He (and the rest of the support staff) are the reason I keep on recommending FutureQuest.

So, last week Mickey and I flew back to New England, and spent a day and a half in Vermont before heading down to New Jersey for UberCon with my brother. There were some things that went wrong, and there were things that went right, and I think on the whole people had fun (regardless of whether this was because of the con or in some cases in spite of it, it’s still a good thing). I also managed to finally step down from Guest Director (which I was kind of shoved into doing in the first place), and as it stands, I may also be arranging to be bought out as well. If that happens, I’m also going to retire from Avatar.

For those of you that know me and know how long I’ve been on Avatar, you can understand how big that is. I’ve been playing since May 1997, and became an immortal (staff) in June/July of 1998. That’s a long time to do or play anything, really, but I think it may be time. I’m not going to go into details about what is making me consider getting out of both Avatar and UberCon, as the details don’t really matter. There are a lot of variables, not the least of which that I could (and would like to) spend the time I was devoting to those projects on projects of my own, such as Critical Games, learning to program, game design, my senior year of college, and other things.

Maybe I’m a fool for leaving, especially since a Director position in a profitable convention could be a pretty “cush” job if that’s what I did for a living. It’s not something that I am enriched by or enjoy doing, however, so why would I want that job? (Especially since currently it is just the idea of a paying job, not an actually paying one.)

On to other things: Mickey flew back home on Monday, so it’s going to be a long 3 weeks before I get to see her again, which sucks a whole bunch. (Miss ya, sweetie!) That said, since my semester ended this past Friday, I have two weeks before residency to do whatever I want to do (hence the blogging, and hopefully at least one article for Critical Games). If I’d had room, I would have brought my programming books, since this would have been an ideal time to sit down and hack away at some of my programming projects.

This post is a little convoluted (as posts after an extended period of not posting generally are), and I’m sorry about that. I’ll try to get back into the blogging groove on a bit more of a consistent basis from now on.
